Maryland Hispanic Bar Association supports Sotomayor

May 29, 2009 –

"The Maryland Hispanic Bar Association supports President Obama's nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace Justice David Souter on the Supreme Court," said Association President Joseph Morales. "President Obama’s selection of Judge Sotomayor demonstrates the administration’s true commitment to diversity in Government.

"We are confident that as Congress looks into her superb qualifications, everyone will be as impressed with Judge Sotomayor's legal credentials and inspiring life story as we are. [Her nomination] once again shows that the great experiment that is our Nation continues to move towards the fulfillment of the hope and ideal that all men are created equal.”

Text of Gov. O'Malley's speech at Maryland Space Business Roundtable

May 26, 2009 —

I am honored to be the first Governor to have the opportunity to meet with this roundtable, and am very appreciative of that invitation.

I wanted to spend some time with you today for a couple of reasons. First, because Maryland's space industry has been, in many ways, an unsung economic hero for our State, and it is an important part of our strategy for growing Maryland's high-tech sector.

Nearly $1.6 billion flow to Maryland businesses from NASA contracts each year, and nearly 55 cents of every dollar of Goddard Space Center contract dollars are spent in our State. NASA alone employs 10,000 people in our State, and thousands of additional Marylanders are employed in space enterprises related to work with NOAA, the US Geological Survey and many of our national security agencies which we are so fortunate to have in Maryland.

Montgomery County: A Good Budget in Tough Times

Roger Berliner
May 27, 2009 —

By Roger Berliner
Montgomery County Council, District 1

Dear District 1 Residents and Friends,

After months of deliberations, and a last minute unwelcome response from the State Board of Education, the Council passed a good budget in tough times.

Spending for county government services will be 2.2 percent lower than last year, the sharpest decrease in almost two decades; 400 jobs were eliminated; and our employees gave up their cost-of-living increases.  At the same time, we kept our commitment to honor the charter limit on property taxes, and even provided for a $690 tax credit for homeowners.

Constellation Energy applauds proposed climate change law

May 18, 2009 –

Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG) Chairman, President and CEO Mayo A. Shattuck III today released the following statement regarding proposed climate change legislation:

"Climate change is one of the most important issues of our time and the House Energy and Commerce Committee has crafted a thoughtful blueprint outlining the essential steps we must take to achieve America's long-term greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals, improve our energy security, and usher in a new generation of low-emission power generation resources. While we see important opportunities for refinement and improvement, the revised American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 that will be considered this week provides a strong foundation to rapidly reach national consensus on an ambitious, long-term policy. We believe it is vital that this important legislation move out of committee and to the House floor for consideration this summer.
