September 15, 2011 — The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce (GGCC), Montgomery County Police - 5th District, the Upcounty Regional Services Center, BlackRock Center for the Arts & over 50 community members joined together yesterday at “Germantown Remembers”, a commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of 9-11.September 15, 2011 — The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce (GGCC), Montgomery County Police - 5th District, the Upcounty Regional Services Center, BlackRock Center for the Arts & over 50 community members joined together yesterday at “Germantown Remembers”, a commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of 9-11.
“Sometimes we take our safety for granted and the 10th anniversary of 9-11 is an opportunity to remember a time when we weren’t safe. We needed the police, firefighters and EMTs, and they were there. It is important for the business community to remember those individuals who keep us safe every day,” said GGCC President Marilyn Balcombe, in a release.
The crowd was moved by the words & tears of Peter Ahearn, a transitional service officer at Disabled American Veterans. Ahearn was in New York, working on September 11, 2001. He spoke, for the first time publicly, of his experience during the attacks & how he dealt & is still dealing with the aftermath of that day.
"This is a very special opportunity to say 'thank you' to them [public safety and military personnel] and also to their families who share them with us,” stated Catherine Matthews, Director of the Upcounty Regional Services Center, in a release.
