March 21, 2011 — KBE Building Corporation hosted a Topping Out Ceremony on March 15th for the addition it is building on Patapsco Hall, a residence hall on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Topping out ceremonies are conducted when the last steel beam or precast concrete plank is laid to form the structural skeleton of the building. The event celebrates the hard work completed to date and engenders good luck for the remainder of the project.
All trade staff on the project were treated to a barbeque lunch prior to signing the final plank. With all signatures in place, including those from the UMBC project team and KBE, the Design-Builder, the plank was hoisted into place amid cheers and applause.
The Patapsco Hall addition includes four stories and a limited basement. There will be 68 double rooms, eight triples, 24 singles and three studio apartments for graduate resident staff that will include a kitchen and bathroom in each unit. This building will be the first LEED certified residence facility at UMBC. The additions are connected to the west end of Patapsco Hall. Construction on the renovation portion of the project is expected to be completed in August. KBE Building Corporation is the Design-Builder for the project, with Newman Architects of New Haven, CT as its Design partner. This is the sixth design-build residence hall for the KBE-Newman team.
