The Baltimore Inner Harbor’s newest jewel, The Walter Sondheim Fountain, was unveiled July 28 during a special dedication ceremony attended by more than one hundred people.

The dramatic and fun-filled fountain, designed by Thomas Balsley Associates and Hord Coplan and Macht, Inc., incorporates water jets shooting up from the ground level, timed with the visual glow of changing colored lights and music.
"If Mr. Sondheim were hear today I know he would be overjoyed to see the citizens of Baltimore and visitors from around the world gathering here at the Harbor around the fountain," said Mayor Sheila Dixon in a statement. “With the creation of this beautiful fountain overlooking the Harbor, it is clear that although he is not here physically, his spirit has never left our hearts nor the City of Baltimore."Located at West Shore Park in the Inner Harbor, the fountain was funded by Baltimore City, the State of Maryland and many of the city’s community and business leaders in tribute to Walter Sondheim whose decades of tireless commitment to Baltimore and to creating an Inner Harbor were known around the world. Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore secured the funding from the private sector for the funding of the Walter Sondheim Fountain.
“Walter would be delighted in knowing that this space is a place for children and families of all races, from Baltimore and points beyond, to play together in a fountain overlooking the Harbor he so proudly helped create,” said Michael Hankin, chairman of the board of Waterfront Partnership in a statement.
West Shore Park development was lead by Baltimore Development Corporation and designed by the renowned New York design firm Thomas Balsey. The Park incorporates vast open space referred to as the ‘great lawn’ now used for festivals and special events as well as shaded tree-lined areas raised above the promenade.
The Walter Sondheim Fountain was designed to serve as an attraction in its own right, as well as a special addition to West Shore Park.
