Chairman of Blueprint Maryland

Growing up as the son of a union electrician, John learned at a young age the importance of hard work. He also saw first-hand how stable jobs can give an entire family a chance and make communities stronger. After completing law school, John’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish two NYSE-listed companies headquartered in Maryland.
In 2000, John founded CapitalSource, which helped create thousands of jobs by financing small to mid-sized companies. Building on a commitment to helping small businesses, John recently started BancAlliance, a cooperative of community banks whose mission is to pool the resources of smaller banks in order to compete with the big banks. As community banks know their local environments better, they are often more willing to lend, putting money into the local economy.
John’s business activities are matched by a commitment to public service. Long involved in community and philanthropy, his concern for Maryland’s economic future led him to establish Blueprint Maryland, a non-profit focused on fostering private sector job creation. An early voice on the need to diversify Maryland’s economy, John brought together business, organizational and community leaders to explore job growth and strengthening our workforce.
