February 20, 2012 - Manekin Construction has broken ground on an $8 million multipurpose stadium facility at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md.
“The McDaniel College stadium presents a unique opportunity from a prominent institution,” said Craig Wess, president of Manekin Construction. “Being awarded the project was the result of a solid team effort by our consultants, suppliers and subcontractors.”
With a targeted completion date by the first home football game on Sept. 15, the two-story brick and concrete facility is under construction on the site of the current grandstand.
Marshall Craft Associates has designed the facility to include an accessible pedestrian walkway linking the college’s landmark caboose with the stadium facility. A new entrance and roadway on West Main Street also will be built.
Retaining its hallmark bowl seating and tradition of drive-in tailgating, the stadium will have an increased seating capacity of 1, 434 including accessible seats. Additional features include concessions, public restrooms, coaches’ rooms, observation boxes, a large press box, a training room, filming areas, home and visiting team meeting rooms, and a reception and gathering room.
The fully-equipped facility will be used by intercollegiate sports teams (Green Terror football, women’s field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s track and field), in addition to special events.
“McDaniel’s dynamic athletic program enriches the college’s living-learning community,” said Dr. Roger Casey, president of McDaniel College. “The new stadium will help support the college’s student-athletes, its coaches, and spectators by providing an improved game-day experience.”
Funded entirely through charitable gifts, the stadium will be named for Alumnus and Trustee Kenneth R. Gill, a former Green Terror football player who presented his alma mater with gifts totaling $2.25 million.
