November 29, 2011 — Sheela Murthy, founder and president of the Murthy Law Firm, will be the recipient of The Children’s Guild's 2012 Sadie Award. Murthy practices United States immigration law, bringing professionals from around the world to the United States. Murthy helps lead the MurthyNayak Foundation, a nonprofit nongovernmental organization that seeks to help with children’s and women’s health and educational needs, support programs that assist immigrants, educate and advocate for immigration, and support disaster relief efforts. Murthy serves on boards for nonprofit organizations including the American Immigration Council, Stevenson University and the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, a board she currently chairs. In addition, she helps lead United Way International and United Way of Central Maryland, which named her the 2009 Philanthropist of the Year. The Children’s Guild Institute, a nonprofit child-serving organization, consists of The Children’s Guild, which includes special needs schools in Baltimore City and Prince George’s County serving children and adolescents who are difficult to educate due to autism, multiple disabilities and trauma.
