June 21, 2011 — Jacqueline L. Allen, an associate in Saul Ewing's Business and Finance Department, has been named the recipient of the Alex Fee Memorial Pro Bono Service Award by the Maryland State Bar Association. Since 2008, as part of the Maryland State Bar Association’s Homeless Persons Representation Project, Allen has helped 27 people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless to obtain expungements of certain charges listed on their criminal records. According to a release, because certain charges are available publicly in the Maryland Judiciary case search and checked by many employers, obtaining an expungement of eligible charges can increase the chances of a person who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless of finding stable employment, lower the homeless recidivism rates in Baltimore City, and decrease the homeless population in Baltimore City. As part of her efforts, Allen recruited four attorneys from Saul Ewing’s Baltimore office to participate in HPRP's volunteer expungement program. Allen concentrates her practice in general business and commercial finances. She received the award on June 11th at the MSBA’s annual meeting in Ocean City, MD. Saul Ewing LLP is a full service law firm with several offices throughout the corridor.
