March 16, 2011 — Goucher College President Sanford J. Ungar has been reappointed to the Public Interest Declassification Board. The board was established by Congress in order to limit government secrecy. Prior to assuming his position at Goucher, Ungar was Director of the Voice of America, the U.S. government’s international broadcasting agency. Prior to that, he was Dean of the School of Communication at American University. Ungar has been Washington editor of The Atlantic, managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine, and a staff writer for The Washington Post. He was a correspondent for United Press International in Paris and for Newsweek in Nairobi, and for many years contributed to The Economist, as well as The New York Times Magazine. He serves on the boards of the Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies, the Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs, and the World Trade Center Institute of Baltimore. He is a member of the executive committee of the Maryland Independent College and University Association. Mr. Ungar is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and he is an appointed member of the U.S. Public Interest Declassification Board. The Public Interest Declassification Board, created under the Public Interest Declassification Act of 2000, is made up of nine members from the public sector who are top scholars within the fields of archives, foreign policy, history, intelligence policy, law, national security, or social science. Goucher College is a traditional liberal arts college in Baltimore.
