March 19, 2010 — Joan Marie Twining, the founder and executive director of the non-profit Rose of Sharon Equestrian School, Inc. (ROSES), has been named Baltimore County Woman of the Year 2010. Twining became certified as a NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) Registered Therapeutic Riding Instructor after graduating from Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center. She also earned a Master of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University in special education/mild to moderate disabilities and spent 12 years as a Baltimore County special educator. Located in Glen Arm, ROSES provides people with disabilities the opportunity to develop basic horsemanship and stable management skills in a uniquely therapeutic environment. Additionally, it has established partnerships with numerous organizations, including: Baltimore County Public Schools ~ Infants and Toddlers Program; Autism Program, Students with Disabilities, Student Service Learning, Post Secondary Vocational Placement Program; Towson University ~ Occupational Therapy Internships, Family Studies and Community Development Internships; Sheppard Pratt’s Forbush School ~ Autism Program; The ARC of Baltimore, and Girl Scouts of America.
